IT Database Specialist
GENERAL SUMMARY
The primary responsibility of the IT Database Specialist is to provide the technical assistance needed to support day-to-day operations of a large 24/7 database environment. This includes assisting Sr DBA with and leading efforts to install, monitor, maintain, performance tune of all Microsoft SQL Server databases. As the IT Database Specialist, you are expected to understand database design, alerting and monitoring, database backup strategies, the ideal candidate has strong technical and troubleshooting skills, understanding of database technologies used while also ensuring data availability, integrity, and efficiency. This position is remote-friendly however may require occasional onsite work at the discretion of PRC management. FOUR DIAMOND SERVICE AGREEMENT All Team Members will display a Four Diamond commitment to Customer Service through the delivery and maintenance of the Quality Standards established by Pechanga Resort Casino. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Works directly with IT Sr. DBA to perform installation and upgrades of Microsoft SQL Server. • Configuration of database resources (storage and compute), features, tools and logs • Monitors and maintains production and development databases • Tracks and resolves database related incidents and requests, fulfils requests and resolves service related issues • Respond to database related alerts and escalations, researches and proposes solutions to recurring problems • Documents, recommends, and implements approved changes and enhancements to the database environment • Works with the Sr. DBA to design and maintain DB specifications, documentation and operating procedures • Implements quality standards based on industry standards and best practices • Performs performance, stress and QA testing • Tests databases upgrade scripts from vendors in QA for system upgrades • Reviews and maintains change documentation for databases • Strong knowledge of troubleshooting issues with SQL Server including: Virtualization, high availability, MSCS/SQL clustering, instancing, blocking, deadlocking, query optimization, linked servers, distributed queries, DTS, recovery models, access violations, hangs, and run-time error scenarios • Very good interpersonal skills, critical thinking, written and oral communication, communications skills, and strong technical documentation skills required • Performs quarterly security audits of PRC databases • Responsible for enterprise backups of all production and development databases • Works closely with IT Sr DBA, IT project managers, development, systems administrators and web developers ACCOUNTABILITY: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS AND GUIDELINES EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION: The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree (BS) in an IT related field with a minimum of 3 years’ experience. In lieu of degree, the candidate should have a minimum of 4 years of IT experience in a large 24/7 environment with appropriate database certifications. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: This position requires very good interpersonal skills, critical thinking, written and oral communication, and strong technical documentation skills. In addition, you must be able to analyze and interpret common scientific, technical and industry journals and documents. As the database administrator, you must respond to common inquires and complaints from customers, management, regulatory agencies, and members of the business community within a reasonable period. Moreover, the database administrator must effectively be able present information to management, public groups, boards of directors and conferences when required. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: This position requires the ability to calculate figures, index sizes, table sizes, proportions, percentages, capacity planning, increases/decreases-percentage change, etc. The position also requires the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. REASONING ABILITY: This position requires the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. This position also requires the ability to accurately interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: • Microsoft database certifications • Must be able to pass a background check • Must be able to obtain a Class “A” gaming license SKILLS/ABILITIES: • Practical knowledge and experience in database design and documentations • Optimization of queries, ETL packages, stored procedure and View creation • Proficient in indices optimization • Knowledge of database engine internals • Knowledge of stored procedures and database security • Knowledge of and ability to write SQL queries. • Ability to work under stressful situations • Mentally strong and able to cope with many challenges ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: • Must be able to take direction and follow through with assigned tasks • Must be a self-starter who is highly motivated and resourceful • Must be able to work with a positive attitude in a fast paced and culturally diverse casino environment • Must be flexible and willing to work nights, weekends and holidays • Long periods of sitting and typing required • Some travel for seminars or training is expected • Must be comfortable working in a 24/7/365 environment • Position requires 24x7 rotational on-call support DISCLAIMER: The above information on this description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
